PUBLIC HEALTH AGENCY FLU ADVICE

5th Jan 2011
PUBLIC HEALTH AGENCY FLU ADVICE

Schools have been given the following advice by the Public Health Agency regarding the management of Flu:

  • Should a child develop flu-like symptoms at school, arrangements should be made for them to be taken home as soon as possible.
  • Should a child develop flu-like symptoms at home, they should be kept away from school until they recover and parents should, if necessary, seek medical advice.

Good Hygiene Advice

Parents and schools are advised to reduce the spread of all viruses by encouraging children to practise good personal hygiene by:

  • Washing hands frequently with soap and water to reduce the spread of virus from hands to face or to others;
  • Covering the nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing and to use a tissue when possible;
  • Disposing of used tissues quickly and carefully;
  • Cleaning hard surfaces (eg door handles) frequently using a normal cleaning product.

In St. Mary's PS, children are encouraged to wash hands frequently and to also use the hand sanitisers in place at various locations around the school.  The school also promotes 'Catch it, Bin it, Kill it'.  This simple approach encourages the children to cover their nose and mouth with a tissue when they cough or sneeze, dispose of the tissue as soon as possible and clean their hands as soon as they can.
